How do I prepare for my PET/CT scan?
- The day before your exam, you will be contacted by the testing center.
- Tell them if you take any medications, if so, they will provide you with special instructions, especially if you are diabetic.
- If your sugar is above 180 at the time of the exam, your test will need to be rescheduled.
- Your last meal before the exam should be foods that are high in protein but low in carbohydrates.
- Some examples of acceptable foods high in protein include: Steak, chicken, fish, cheese, eggs, bacon, or sausage.
- Some examples of foods high in carbohydrates that you should avoid include: Bread, pasta, cereal, soft drinks, juices, or alcoholic beverages.
- Do not eat or drink (except plain water) at least 6 hours prior to the exam.
- If you have been instructed to take medications, then do so with plain water, (no insulin within 4 to 6 hours).
- Do not participate in heavy exercise, and stay away from caffeine and tobacco for 24 hours prior to scan.
- Generally a PET/CT scan is not performed on pregnant women. If you are pregnant or think you may be, talk with your physician.
